การใช้ sorry, excuse me, apologize, pardon, pardon me และ I beg your pardon

"การขอโทษ" ภาษาอังกฤษ ( Apology ) ที่นิยมใช้ มี 4 แบบ ดังนี้

1.  Sorry

2.  Excuse me

3.  I beg your pardon  หรือ   Pardon  หรือ  Pardom me

4. Apologize

ซึ่งแต่ละแบบก็ถูกใช้แตกต่างกันออกไป แต่อาจใช้แทนกันได้บางกรณี ดังนี้

แบบที่ 1    Sorry  ( ซอ' ริ )

คำว่า  " Sorry " แปลว่า ขอโทษ หรือ เสียใจ ใช้ขอโทษหรือแสดงความเสียใจ ดังนี้

กรณีที่ 1 เมื่อทำผิด หรือทำสิ่งที่ไม่ดี ไม่ถูกต้อง แล้วต้องการขอโทษ อาจพูดว่า

Sorry.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry that's my fault.

I'm sorry I'm late.

I'm sorry for the mistake.

I'm sorry to trouble you.

I''m sorry I didn't mean to do that.

I'm sorry to hurt you.

กรณีที่ 2 เมื่อได้ยินข่าวร้าย ข่าวที่ไม่ค่อยดีสักเท่าไหร่ หรือแสดงความผิดหวัง ส่วนมากใช้ว่า  I'm sorry to that.  เช่น

Nick : Hi Sarah, how are you today?

Sarah :  Not very well. I have got a terrible headache.

Nick : I'm sorry to hear that. I think you should go back and have some rest.

Sarah : Yes I may. Thank you.

กรณีที่ 3 เมื่อต้องการปฏิเสธข้อเสนอ หรือคำเชิญชวน เช่น

ตัวอย่างบทสนทนา

Alice : Jack , I'm going to the library would you like to come?

Jack : I'm sorry I'm really busy but thank you anyway. Maybe next time.

Alice : No problem. See you later bye.

Jack : Bye.

กรณีที่ 4 กรณีฟังไม่ชัด หรือฟังไม่เข้าใจ ต้องการถามคู่สนทนาว่า "เมื่อกี้คุณพูดว่าอะไรนะ" เช่น

Ben : How much does the car cost?

Seller : It costs eight hundred thousand and five hundred baht.

Ben : Sorry?

Seller : It's eight hundred thousand and five hundred baht.

Ben : Ok. Thanks

Seller : Your welcome.

มาดูอีกหนึ่งตัวอย่าง

Mum : Tina, would you pass me me the salt please?

Tina : Sorry mum,  what did you say?

Mum : I said " could you pass me the salt please ? "

Tina : Oh yes, here you are.

Mum : Thanks.

แบบที่ 2    Excuse me  ( เอ็กซฺ กิวซฺ' มี )

คำว่า  " Excuse me "   ใช้ขอโทษในกรณี เมื่อต้องการขัดจังหวะบุคคลอื่น ก่อนการพูด ถาม  ขอร้อง ไหว้วาน รบกวน บอกกล่่าว ตักเตือน ขออนุญาต ขอทาง หรือ เมื่อกระทำกริยาไม่สุภาพ เช่น

กรณีที่ 1  เมื่อต้องการถาม

Excuse me, what time is it please?

Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the airport please?

Excuse me, are you Mr. Jones?

กรณีที่ 2  เมื่อต้องการขอร้อง ไหว้วาน หรือรบกวนบุคคลอื่น

Excuse me, would you open the window please?

Excuse me, can you help me move the table please?

กรณีที่ 3 บอกกล่่าว ตักเตือน

Excuse me sir, it's no smoking here.

Excuse me, the music is too loud would you mind turning the volume down please?

กรณีที่ 4  การขออนุญาต

Excuse me, may I come in please?

Excuse me, can I sit here please?

กรณีที่ 5  การขอทาง

กรณีมีคนยืนขวางทาง เมื่อต้องการขอให้เขาหลีกทาง เราใช้

" Excuse me " 

กรณีที่ 6 เมื่อกระทำกริยาไม่สุภาพ หรือ เสียมารยาท เช่น

กรณี ไอ จาม เรอ ต่อหน้าบุคคลอื่น ตามารยาทอังกฤษ ต้องขอโทษทันที โดยพูดว่า " Excuse me"

กรณีที่ 7 เมื่่อฟังไม่ชัด หรือต้องการถามว่า " คุณพูดว่าอะไรนะ "

สามารถใช้ Sorry? / Pardon? / หรือ Excuse me?

ส่วนใหญ่นิยม Sorry? และ Pardon?

แบบที่ 3    Pardon / Pardon me/ I beg your pardon.

คำว่า " Pardon "  มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

กรณีที่ 1  เมื่่อฟังไม่ชัด หรือต้องการถามว่า " คุณพูดว่าอะไรนะ "

ดังที่ได้กล่าวมาแล้วข้างต้น ใช้  Pardon ?

ตัวอย่างเช่น

Alice : Where are you from?

Mike : South Africa.

Alice : Pardon?

Mike : South Africa.

กรณีที่ 2  สามารถใช้แทน Excuse me เมื่อกระทำกริยาไม่สุภาพ หรือ เสียมารยาท เช่น ไอ จาม เรอ

คำว่า " Pardon me "  มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

เราสามารถใช้ Pardon me แทน Excuse me ในกรณีขัดจังหวะ หรือเมื่อต้องการถาม ขอร้อง รบกวน หรือ ขออนุญาต เช่น

Pardon me, what time is it please?

Pardon me, would you open the door please?

คำว่า " I beg your pardon "  มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

กรณีที่ 1 เมื่อต้องการขอโทษเมื่อทำผิด เช่นเดียวกับ " Sorry "

กรณีที่ 2 เมื่อกระทำกริยาไม่สุภาพ หรือ เสียมารยาท เช่นเดียวกับ " Sorry " และ " Excuse me "

แบบที่ 4    Apologize  ( อะพอล' โลไจซฺ )
คำว่า " Apologize " ใช้ขอโทษกรณีที่ทำผิด หรือทำให้บุคคลอื่นเสียใจ ผิดหวัง ซึ่งเป็นทางการมากกว่า Sorry เช่น

I apologize for missing the appointment. ขอโทษที่ผิดนัด
